Science Unwrapped: Celebrate Undergrad Research - Biological Engineers Elizabeth Vargis and Sophia Hessami

Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science, invites inquiring of minds of all ages to participate in science learning fun. Admission is free. Each event begins with a brief science talk following by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research." March 21 Speakers: Biological engineer Elizabeth Vargis pursues study of Raman spectroscopy, muscular atrophy and subretinal tissue research. Vargis and undergraduate scholar Sophia Hessami are developing in vitro models of retinal pigment epithelial cells to better understand disease, test new treatments and build computer simulations to understand the role of growth factors. In the process, Hessami is developing skills and experience she plans to apply to graduate study in biological engineering.

Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research."

April 11 Speakers: Mathematicians Matt Young, faculty member in USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and undergraduate researcher Seth Porter, conduct research to define and compute algebraic invariants of knots in a three-dimensional vector space. A knot is an embedding of a circle into a three-dimensional space. A knot invariant is a quantity assigned to a knot that remains the same for any other knot that is topologically equivalent to it. Matt and Seth will “untangle” this concept, while explaining the benefits of getting involved in undergraduate research.
