Five Research-Based Practices that Promote Engagement
Workshop/Training | Sparkshops
We know students bring more than their brains to class. Research has shown that increased feelings of belonging, autonomy, and competence can increase engagement and improve learning outcomes. Orienting your material in a way that is personally relevant to your students and having an awareness of social comparison are also impactful to students’ learning experiences. This Sparkshop will share how you can implement these ideas into your instructional practices, classroom environment, and the behind-the-scenes administrative work you do to keep a course running. As with all Sparkshops, there will be opportunities for exploring and learning from one another.

Being at your Peak!
Workshop/Training | Sparkshops
The professoriate can be a very satisfying life-long career IF it is handled well. Long-term work-life balance requires two things: a vision of what is needed for success professionally and personally and the work habits used by successful academics to achieve long-term work and life satisfaction. This practical interactive workshop, based on the evidence-based Peak Performing model, will explore the challenge of doing well in faculty jobs without having to be perfect. The workshop is based on the workshop, Peak Performing Professor, and the book, The Peak Performing Professor: A Practical Guide to Productivity and Happiness, both by Susan Robison (The Destressor Professor).
What not to do: Group analysis of the “The Worst Lecture Ever”
Workshop/Training | Sparkshops
Sit in your discomfort. This Sparkshop will center around the video "The Worst Lecture Ever," where attendees will analyze and debate the content, presentation style, and impact of this lecture. The session will delve into the elements that make the lecture "the worst," such as poor communication, lack of structure, and an overall disconnection from the students. We will then talk about what qualities make a good lecturer and how this contrasts with the video and what strategies could have been employed to avoid the failures displayed in the video.
