AIARE II Avalanche Course

The AIARE 2 is a three-day/24-hour course that provides backcountry travelers an opportunity to advance their decision making skills in more complicated situations such as being a leader within a small travel group, traveling in more complicated terrain, and/or developing a travel plan where online resources are scarce. The AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. Skis or splitboard with skins and touring bindings are required for this course. SNOWSHOES ARE NOT ALLOWED! Additionally, an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe are required. These items are available to rent from the USU Outdoor Programs. Make sure to reserve equipment in advance as quantities are limited. Participants must be comfortable traveling in blue to black resort terrain on skis or splitboard. This course is not recommended for beginners.

Oil and natural gas, wood products, minerals and other resources from the earth have fueled historic growth throughout the world, generated jobs and offered communities a wealth of economic activity. Modern life is literally built on these resources, and continues to rely on them for its upward economic trajectory. But resources have finite limits and our resources and economic activities interact in very complex ways. This symposium is designed to enable the USU community explore these cross-disciplinary topics, with the goal of building a compelling vision for a way that economics and environmental sustainability can co-evolve.

Collaborative Design, Development & Financing of Commercial Property About the Lecture: Exploring a path from LAEP to developing and financing commercial property, informed by the need to collaborate with the participants that can take a project from design to a successful reality. Speaker Bio: Kurt Altvater is the Senior Vice President of the National Loan and Portfolio Sale Advisors of CBRE Capital Markets. He has over forty years of experience in commercial real estate and participated in the placement of more than $23 billion in loan and property sales at CBRE. Kurt has been a leading sales professional and received CRBE’s National Teamwork Award multiple times. After graduating from Utah State, Kurt spent two years as an architectural designer and planner in San Francisco. The turning point in his career happened while working for John Portman, the author of “Architect as Developer.” There Kurt learned the importance of balancing aesthetic as well as economic goals. Backcountry Ski Basics

Come learn the basics of backcountry skiing/boarding with us! We’ll spend an evening in the classroom covering how to use alpine touring equipment/splitboard to get up and down the mountain, the basics of avalanche safety equipment, how to locate and interpret an avalanche danger forecast, and route planning. The following day we’ll head out into the Bear River mountains for a full day on our touring equipment. In addition to getting some backcountry turns, we’ll cover the basics of avalanche rescue, snowpack evaluation, and terrain management. This trip is geared toward resort skiers/boarders who want to learn how to venture into the backcountry safely. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding black diamond terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking and a full day in winter conditions, snow or shine. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+ tax for this trip. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe, and student leadership.

Artist St. Clair Detrick-Jules will discuss what she learned through an almost four-year-long journey photographing and interviewing 101 Black women with natural hair for her photojournalism book, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood, a large-scale visual anthropology exploring the deep, complex relationships across generations between Black women and their hair that Kirkus Reviews calls “compelling and inspirational...a powerful celebration of self-acceptance and sisterhood.”

Beginner Backcountry Ski Tour with Backcountry Squatters (female/non-binary)

Come grab some backcountry turns with us! We will venture into the Bear River backcountry to seek out snow that you can't get to on a ski lift. Learn some of the basics of backcountry travel and safety. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding double blue to black diamond resort terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking. This trip is specific for female & non-binary folks, partnering with Backcountry Squatters. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+tax for trip participants. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and student leadership.

ThriftJam isn't your average clothing store; it's a mission to redefine fashion with sustainability at its core. Logan and Ellie have transformed three old-school buses into mobile clothing stores, delivering a unique shopping experience. Within these mobile stores, customers find a handpicked selection that includes vintage classics and limited-edition high-end items, each meticulously crafted from discarded textiles that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. We will explore some of the fantastic riding terrain around Blind Hollow and spend the evenings around the fire in the comforts of the OP's Mongolian-Style yurt. Some backcountry experience is recommended and participants must be expert/advanced riders (able to comfortably ride black diamond western resort terrain). Participants must be in good physical condition and prepared for strenuous uphill hiking. Winter backcountry travel equipment(Alpine Touring, Telemark, Splitboard) are required and available to rent from the OP for a nominal fee. NO SNOWSHOES. Oil and natural gas, wood products, minerals and other resources from the earth have fueled historic growth throughout the world, generated jobs and offered communities a wealth of economic activity. Modern life is literally built on these resources, and continues to rely on them for its upward economic trajectory. But resources have finite limits and our resources and economic activities interact in very complex ways. This symposium is designed to enable the USU community explore these cross-disciplinary topics, with the goal of building a compelling vision for a way that economics and environmental sustainability can co-evolve.

This conference is perfect for specialty crop producers engaged in direct marketing including CSAs, farmers markets, and other outlets as well as commercial growers that are seeking the most up-to-date research on crop production and pest management. Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Nate Orchard and Jake Webber

Nate Orchard, a former NFL player, began his career with Advanced Window Products after seven years in the NFL. Nate started his journey to the NFL at the University of Utah, followed by playing on multiple pro teams. Once his NFL career was over, he decided to follow the path of business. He is now the Head of Installation for Advanced Window Products and an expert in his field committed to ensuring all projects are completed to high standards of excellence and customer satisfaction.
Jake Webber is the Head of Marketing for Advanced Window Products. After positions at Taft, Snap Finance, and EY he decided to partner at Advanced Window Products with Nate Orchard. Jake brings creativity and strategic vision to the forefront of the company’s promotional efforts. With his background in strategy, he creates innovative and strategic marketing campaigns that not only showcase the technical advantages the company’s window products provide, but also emphasize the aesthetic aspects that set them apart.
Nate and Jake bought Advanced Window Products in October of 2022 and have had increasing success since the acquisition. They are dedicated to being more than just a window and door company, they are a team that improves their customers' homes and lives.

I plan to share a bit of the journey, lessons learned along the way, and where I see the transportation world going in the future. Speaker Bio: Justin Romeo is the Director of Special Projects, in the Transportation Planning and Management Division of the New York City Department of Transportation. He is a transportation professional working to improve the mobility options that exiting within cities through the use of data, policy, and emerging transportation technologies. Full Moon Snowshoe Hike

Come spend an evening snowshoeing under the glow of a full moon. Be sure to dress warm for the cooler temperatures after dark. No snowshoeing experience is necessary, beginners are most welcome. Participants must be prepared for moderate physical activity in a winter environment. Trip cost includes snowshoe rental and transportation. Pre-Trip Meeting: NA (You will be contacted by OP trip leaders 24 hours before the hike with trip details and logistics) All participants must have health insurance and abide by OP and University Policies.

Beginner Backcountry Ski Tour

Come grab some backcountry turns with us! We will venture into the Bear River backcountry to seek out snow that you can't get to on a ski lift. Learn some of the basics of backcountry travel and safety. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding double blue to black diamond resort terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+tax for trip participants. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and student leadership.

Trans/Nonbinary Allies on Campus aims to increase awareness and understanding of our trans/nonbinary community and further understand specific trans/nonbinary issues while training participants to stand with, and advocate for trans/nonbinary individuals. Participants will gain a basic understanding of sex, sexuality, and gender and how these concepts perpetuate microaggressions, discrimination policies, and daily biases. Prepare to dispel some common myths, laugh, and leave with the understanding that there is much work to be done in our community and you are part of the solution. Big 3 Challenge

Will you join the 250, 500, 750, 1000, or 1200lb club? Our fitness staff records your max bench press, squat, and deadlift. Based on your total of all 3, you join the 250, 500, 750, 1000, or 1200lb club! And get a t-shirt to prove it. The Big 3 Challenge will run for two weeks from Feb. 27-29 and March 4-7 in the Fieldhouse. Open lift will be offered each day from 6:00pm to 8:00pm where fitness staff members will be available to sign participants in, spot, and judge lifts. Each participant should warm-up on their own time and will let a fitness staff member know when they are ready to max on whichever lift. Three (3) attempts will be given to each individual for their maximum squat, deadlift, and bench. Any attempt spotted or watched by a fitness staff member will count whether it is a completed or failed lift. Lifts will be recorded immediately after each attempt. Lift attempts may be completed in any order, on any day of the challenge. Lifts may not be completed outside of the ‘open lift’ times. Let's go cross-country skiing! Come spend a few hours gliding on snow up Logan Canyon. We will explore one of the many cross-country ski-friendly areas in our big campus backyard. Trip cost includes cross-country equipment rental, transportation and student leadership.

Drones: Where Can They Take You? Presentation by Shalyn Drake

The Library & Learning Commons (LLC) is proud to welcome Shalyn Drake, Lecturer
in the Department of Aviation Technology, to speak about drones, responsible usage, and its applications across numerous fields. Drake will speak of the still emerging technology as it can apply to fields such as agriculture, welding, mining, the inspection of infrastructure, and natural resource management.
The event will take place in the LLC and there will be time for Q&A with the speaker afterwards along with, weather permitting, a drone demonstration. Refreshments will also be served!

Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Jon Schmidt
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Jon Schmidt is a contemporary American pianist and composer, celebrated for his versatile musical talent and compositions. Schmidt’s musical interest started at a young age because of his parent's gift of an early education in music. He started teaching piano lessons at 16 and began a successful solo career in his early twenties. His distinctive style blends classical influences with modern elements, creating a unique musical fusion that resonates with audiences worldwide.
When going to college, Schmidt was worried about a career in music. He studied English and planned to get an MBA. After continuous pestering from people asking him to play the piano, he finally rented out a concert hall to introduce himself to the public. His audience loved him, and he hasn’t regretted pursuing his music career.
Jon Schmidt is a member of The Piano Guys, a musical group known for their innovative arrangements and music videos. The Piano Guys was formed in 2010 and the group has a large online following which has created millions of views on YouTube. Their goal is to inspire those who listen to their music.
Big 3 Challenge

Will you join the 250, 500, 750, 1000, or 1200lb club? Our fitness staff records your max bench press, squat, and deadlift. Based on your total of all 3, you join the 250, 500, 750, 1000, or 1200lb club! And get a t-shirt to prove it. The Big 3 Challenge will run for two weeks from Feb. 27-29 and March 4-7 in the Fieldhouse. Open lift will be offered each day from 6:00pm to 8:00pm where fitness staff members will be available to sign participants in, spot, and judge lifts. Each participant should warm-up on their own time and will let a fitness staff member know when they are ready to max on whichever lift. Three (3) attempts will be given to each individual for their maximum squat, deadlift, and bench. Any attempt spotted or watched by a fitness staff member will count whether it is a completed or failed lift. Lifts will be recorded immediately after each attempt. Lift attempts may be completed in any order, on any day of the challenge. Lifts may not be completed outside of the ‘open lift’ times. Upon completion of the challenge, participants will ‘sign out’ and provide a shirt size for whichever ‘club’ their 3 lifts total to. 3 lifts, 3 attempts, t-shirt guaranteed!

Enjoy the winners of the annual Student Concerto Competition as they perform favorite works of the solo repertoire: Caden Webb (voice); Joshua Swank (cello); Carissa Devenport (violin); and Adam Bowen, Christopher Chapman, and Hayden Rouse (piano). Solo works by Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Gounod, Korngold, and Skoryk, plus an electrifying overture by American composer Jessie Montgomery.
"Road Trip" Art Exhibit

Photographs by Dave Hanson, a local businessman and award-winning artist, will be on exhibit at Gallery East during the month of February. The exhibit, entitled “Road Trip,” will be on view from February 2nd – March 1st in the Central Instruction Building (CIB) on the campus of Utah State University Eastern.
Gallery East is free and open to the public during the academic year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed weekends and holidays.

In June 2023, the United States Supreme Court eliminated race-based affirmative action at colleges and universities – a decades-long battle and an extension of the debate over diversity, equity, and inclusion on campuses across the country. So, where does the relationship between race and higher education go from here? In "Colorblind Universities and the Future of Higher Education," Dr. Brandon James Render provides historical context for the recent Supreme Court decision and the deeper implications it has for colleges and universities beyond admissions. Prof. Mihaylov, a visitor of SDSC, specializing in Big Data, AI, and deeptech engineering. He holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Warwick. His academic journey includes contributions to esteemed institutions like the Russian Academy of Science, the National University of Singapore, the Abu Dhabi Academy, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Currently serving as an AI expert for the United Nations, Prof. Mikhaylov brings a practical dimension to his expertise by actively commercializing AI startups. With three successful exits in his career, he demonstrates a keen understanding of translating research into business innovation. Alongside 27 granted patents and authorship of 10 books in three languages, Prof. Mikhaylov’s impactful career spans both academia and the dynamic landscape of AI entrepreneurship.
