UCC Celebrates 15 Years of Service
UCC members in 2001 constructed an ADA accessible trail in the Capitol Reef National Park campground. The group celebrates its 15th anniversary Saturday, Sept. 24.
The Utah Conservation Corps, based at Utah State University’s Logan campus, celebrates its 15th year of service to the state of Utah Saturday, Sept. 24. Celebrations will start with a community service project that will construct a segment of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail near Blacksmith Fork Canyon and end with a reunion.
“We’re excited to welcome back a number of our alumni as our AmeriCorps members have continuously pushed to improve this program over the years,” said UCC Director Sean Damitz.
The service project is open to the public, and volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants, gloves and eye protection. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the UDWR parking lot at mouth of Blacksmith Fork Canyon along state highway 101.
When the service project concludes at noon, the UCC will host an alumni reunion at its office on 1483 Canyon Road in Logan, Utah. The event will recognize and celebrate the service of AmeriCorps members over the program’s 15-year history.
The UCC, based out of Utah State University’s Center for Civic Engagement and Service-Learning, was formed in 2001 with a mission to develop the conservation leaders of tomorrow through service and education. Since 2001, 1,237 UCC AmeriCorps members have served more than 948,000 hours creating or maintaining 3,325 miles of trail and 417 miles of fence, restoring 40,634 acres of public land and reaching 298,367 students with environmental education.
