Zdenek Named Utah State Athlete of the Week


Women's basketball player hit game-winner against Cal Poly on Saturday

Women's basketball player Christina Zdenek won a game for the Aggies on Saturday (Jan. 10) and won the Utah State Athlete of the Week award on Monday (Jan. 12). The award is voted on by a state media panel.


Zdenek scored a season-high 31 points, including a game-winning three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in the game to lead Utah State to a 76-73 win against Cal Poly on Saturday. The freshman from West Hills, Calif., also had nine points in Utah State's 86-51 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Thursday. 


Zdenek's 31 points are the most by any player in the Big West Conference this season. She leads the Aggies in scoring through 11 games at 12.1 per contest. Her 14 three-pointers top the team as does her 86.1 free throw shooting percentage. She also leads the team in minutes played (30.5) and steals (17). 
Utah State, 1-10 on the season, will return to action when it travels to Pacific on Thursday (Jan. 15) and at Cal State Northridge on Saturday (Jan.17).


Nominees From Other Sports Included: 


Basketball - Spencer Nelson... Led Utah State to two road wins at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly. He averaged 15.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 blocks in the two wins. He also shot 75 percent (12 of 16) from the field. Against UCSB he scored all of his 15 points in the second half, including nine straight. Against Cal Poly he had 15 points, a season-high 13 rebounds and four assists.
