Aggies track team underway on first day


Utah State logoUtah State's Neil Warr finished 15th in the javelin throw on the first day of the NCAA Track and Field Championships here on Wednesday. Several USU competitors were competing late Wednesday and their results were not available.

Warr, a senior, had finished third at the NCAA West Regional to qualify for the national meet. His throw of 65.79 meters (215-10 feet and inches) was just four feet and three inches shy of reaching the 12-man finals in the javelin. He recorded his best throw on the first of three tosses.

Aggie Joel Johnson was competing in the two-day, 10-event decathlon, which will conclude on Thursday. Through five events, Johnson had scored 3,593 points to stand in 20th place overall.

He scored the most points in the two running events with 789 points in the 100 meters and 769 points in the 400. He also scored 736 points in the long jump, 559 in the shot put and 740 in the high jump. His 6-04 high jump tied for the eighth best among the decathlon competitors.

Junior Ryan Bruhn completed the qualifying in the hammer throw by finishing 24th with a throw of 56.56 meters (185-07).

USU freshman shot putter Kelli Burton was not competing until late Wednesday night.
