Utah State University Professor to Speak on Depression-Era Survival Stories of Everyday Women

Voices from the margins of society have always fascinated Utah State University associate professor of English Patricia Gantt. So when she discovered little-known oral histories from the Federal Writers’ Project, she was intrigued.

“I wanted to find out what ordinary women were experiencing during the Depression,” said Gantt. “I looked for narratives that showed the range of what women were going through every day in the 1930s.”

As part of the Department of English Speakers Series, Gantt will present “To Catch a Dollar: Women’s Oral Histories from the1930s Federal Writers’ Project” Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 12:30 p.m. in the Utah State University Haight Alumni Center. The event is free, and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. Gantt’s talk is an excerpt from a forthcoming book to be published by Ohio University Press.
