Utah State University Launches New Portal: MyUSU 2.0

By Jen Wright |

As Utah State University nears the beginning of fall semester, an important communication and connection tool is getting an upgrade. The MyUSU portal that has been used by students, faculty and staff since 2012 will be phased out and replaced by MyUSU 2.0, which launched Aug. 16.

“While the current student portal was effective at enabling students to carry out their university-related business, it was not the ideal tool for creating community and enhancing a vibrant student experience,” said James Morales, USU’s vice president for student affairs. "Students requested a platform that could provide targeted, timely, and personalized communications, and a way for users to connect with each other and organizations across the university."

The new platform, built by Path, looks a lot like some of the social media platforms students and employees already know. Every user will be able to personalize their profile, create a dashboard with links to their most-used tools and resources, see a news feed from friends, groups, and campus organizations they follow, and set what notifications they want to receive through the mobile app.

“Path provided us with an innovative tool that both supports students’ university business needs and also allows them to engage in a more comprehensive way with each other, with faculty and staff, and with the institution,” Morales said.

MyUSU 2.0 will also allow students to track every step of their academic progress and provide an additional avenue for connecting with faculty and advisors. The university will send reminders about important dates and deadlines through the platform.

Max Roberts, a senior in journalism serving this year as the USUSA public relations director, has been on a team handling communication about the MyUSU 2.0 rollout.

“Because a large part of our job in USUSA is to promote student involvement, we especially are looking forward to the new tools encouraging students to easily connect with individuals and organizations on campus, which will further strengthen the Aggie community,” he said.

This will be the first time all USU campuses and locations will share the same portal. Previously, USU Eastern has been separate.

“This is an exciting step in building an even more vibrant, connected USU community and culture all across the state,” said Morales.

While the URL my.usu.edu already brings users to the new platform, the old version will remain accessible during fall semester. An overview of MyUSU 2.0, including a video on how to get started with the platform, is available at usu.edu/myusu-info.

“We encourage all new and returning students, as well as faculty and staff, to get to know MyUSU 2.0 in the next few weeks,” Morales said. “It’s an incredibly useful tool for making connections before the semester even begins.”

The new MyUSU platform looks a lot like some of the social media platforms students and employees already know. Every user will be able to personalize their profile, create a dashboard with links to their most-used tools and resources, see a news feed from friends, groups, and campus organizations they follow, and set what notifications they want to receive through the mobile app.
