Utah State University Launches 'Horizons' Competition Ahead of Year of Undergraduate Research

LOGAN, Utah — The Utah State University Office of Research has announced a new undergraduate research competition, "Horizons," designed to ignite the innovative spirit within its student body.

The Horizons contest will kick off the Year of Undergraduate Research 2025 celebrations. Students from all majors are welcome to participate, but all teams must include at least one first-year student. Horizons provides a unique platform for undergraduates to tackle real-world challenges facing Utah and the wider world.

What sets Horizons apart:

• Open to all majors: No matter your field of study, Horizons encourages you to join the conversation and contribute your unique perspective.
• Embrace interdisciplinarity: Team up with students from diverse backgrounds to create truly innovative solutions.
• Real-world focus: Address critical issues impacting our communities and the planet.
• No prior research experience needed: Horizons is designed to empower even first-year students. The program provides comprehensive training and mentorship throughout the competition.
• Addresses the big picture: Horizons requires students to conceptualize research proposals without having to conduct the research allowing them to be ambitious in their thinking.
• Win big: Compete for a chance to win a top prize of $4,000. Four runner-up teams will also receive $1,500 each.
• Make a difference: Present your solutions to a panel of local changemakers and potentially have a real impact.

Key Dates:

• Competition runs: November 2024 through April 2025.
• Launch Event: Oct. 3, 2024, in Library 154 (Come learn more and meet the team!).
• Team Registration Deadline: Oct. 31, 2024.
• Final Presentations: April 2025.
