Utah State University AmeriCorps Programs Celebrate AmeriCorps Week

LOGAN, Utah — The three AmeriCorps programs based at Utah State University, the Public and School Partnership, Utah Conservation Corps, and Utah Higher Education AmeriCorps Network, are celebrating AmeriCorps Week, March 10-16.

Over the past 30 years USU has ranked first among higher education institution in the state in students serving AmeriCorps terms. During this time more than 4,000 USU students have served in AmeriCorps and redeemed more than $7 million in AmeriCorps education awards at the institution.

USU students serving in AmeriCorps positions have addressed critical community needs in Cache Valley and nationwide, gaining valuable career skills while earning education awards to offset the cost of college attendance. This ethic of public service and community engagement has enabled USU to remain near the top of Washington Monthly National University Rankings in recent years.

“AmeriCorps has been a tremendous benefit for the USU community on many levels, whether it is USU students completing terms of service that enhance their educational experience, spending their federal education awards at USU, or community organizations that build capacity due to the commitment and energy of USU students” said Sean Damitz, USU Center for Community Engagement executive director.

AmeriCorps Week has been designated to recognize the commitment of the millions of Americans who have chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors, and encourage others to follow in their footsteps of service.

This year, AmeriCorps is celebrating three decades of national service. Since inception, more than 1.25 million young Americans and hundreds of thousands more AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers of all backgrounds have served, providing billions of hours of results-driven service across each of the 50 states and US territories.
