Utah State Student-Athletes Excel in the Classroom and on the Fields

Utah State student-athletes registered record-setting results both on the fields of competition and in the classroom during the Fall of 2017 academic semester.

“It’s gratifying to have the success we’ve had on the fields of competition, but seeing our student-athletes achieve at such a high level in the classroom is especially rewarding,” said Utah State Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hartwell. “It shows that we are doing our very best to prepare them for life after their collegiate careers.”

Utah State student-athletes lit up the academic scoreboard last semester with 47 individuals achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Also impressive is that USU’s 400-plus student-athletes combined for a 3.25 GPA for the fall semester, as well as a cumulative 3.20 GPA, which is the average GPA for all current student-athletes for all semesters enrolled. Both of those GPA’s are the highest ever recorded in the athletics department. Furthermore, every athletics team recorded an average GPA of 2.94 or higher for the fall semester.

“Our student-athletes should take great pride in what they are accomplishing academically,” Hartwell added. “It is a demonstration of their discipline, focus and commitment in the classroom. These same qualities are helping them achieve similar success in their respective sports.”

Athletically, Utah State currently ranks 45th nationally in the latest 2017-18 Learfield Directors' Cup Standings, which ranks third in the Mountain West and ninth among all schools outside the Power 5, after debuting at No. 16 in the initial standings that were released at the end of November.

The Directors' Cup tracks the nation's most successful intercollegiate athletics programs for their
performances throughout the year and has been tracking the success of the nation's top intercollegiate athletics programs since 1993-94.

Highlighting Utah State’s fall sports were its women’s and men’s cross country programs, who finished the year ranked 14th and 27th in the nation, respectively, following their first-ever appearances at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, while USU’s football program played in its sixth bowl game in the past seven seasons.
