Utah State Extension in Wayne County: Advocate for Ranchers

Rancher Gary Halls in Wayne CountyGary Hallows has been ranching in the area for 25 years and he said more than ever he relies on Extension's Verl Bagley to represent him in pubic lands issues.

"Extension has easy access to research data from other places in the country that are having the same problems we are," Hallows said. "We need this when we are working with federal agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, otherwise we don't have any information other than our own opinion."

This year a top issue is the availability winter rangeland permits and the possibility of reduced grazing permits in the spring, he said. This could mean that ranchers, already devastated by the drought, will have to feed their cattle on-site. Extension has been able to provide the most current research on the effects of the drought on area rangeland.

Hallows said Extension has also been a valuable resource in helping him choose the best varieties of forage grains on his land.
