Utah 4-H Youth Wins National Award

Adriane Smith, Taylorsville, was named the 2005 American Paint Horse Association Youth Member of the Year at the national conference Sept. 29-Oct.1 in Atlanta.

Smith, daughter of Rex and Susan Smith, was selected for the award based on her involvement with the American Paint Horse Association and other horse-related activities, volunteer work, extracurricular activities and letters of recommendation. As the 2005 recipient of this award, Smith received a $1,000 savings bond and a personalized belt buckle.

"Horses are part of Utah's heritage and continue to contribute to the state's economy through ranching, farming and recreation," said Jack Payne, Utah State University vice president for Extension. "This is great individual honor for Adriane, our 4-H horse programs and the equine team."

Smith, a junior at Taylorsville High School, has been involved with 4-H for eight years. She is a 2005-2006 Utah State 4-H Ambassador and received a scholarship to Utah State University for her ambassador work. She also won a trip to the 2005 National 4-H Congress in Atlanta for a state contest portfolio she compiled.

"Adriane is well deserving of this recognition and a fantastic example and product of our Utah 4-H Program," said John Paul Murphy, 4-H youth development specialist for Utah State University Extension. "She is an outstanding state 4-H ambassador and leader."

Smith has been involved with the American Paint Horse Association since 2000 and with horses since she was 3 years old, first showing in leadline with help from her mother, and then with the 4-H mini riders program.

"My involvement has grown from just competing in horse shows many years ago to being a state 4-H Ambassador this year," said Smith. "There is no way I could have accomplished the things I have without 4-H in my life."
