USU's Science Unwrapped Braces for 'Snowmageddon' Friday, Jan. 20
USU statistician Brennan Bean is featured speaker for family friendly event

All ages are invited to the Science Unwrapped presentation, 'Predicting Snowmageddon,' with USU statistician Brennan Bean Friday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center. Learning activities and refreshments follow the talk.
Lots of snow is great for skiers, snowboarders, sledders and thirsty reservoirs. But too much of the white stuff presents a challenge for building designers trying to keep indoor winter dwellers safe.
How do you build homes, schools, office buildings and hospitals that will safely withstand the weight of snow loads?
“By collecting and analyzing LOTS of data and living with a little uncertainty,” says Utah State University statistician Brennan Bean.
Bean presents “Predicting Snowmageddon: Using Data Science to Design Against Disaster” at USU’s Science Unwrapped Friday at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Emert Auditorium, Room ESLC 130 of the Eccles Science Learning Center on campus. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.
Hands-on learning activities led by USU student groups and community volunteers, along with refreshments, follow Bean’s presentation. The talk will also be livestreamed via AggieCast from the Science Unwrapped website.

Bean is the fourth speaker in Science Unwrapped’s 2022-23 “Ch-Ch-Changes” series, which explores the science of change from different scientific disciplines.
“With a nod to the late musical legend David Bowie, Science Unwrapped explores the science of change — including dramatic changes we see in our climate and environment, as well as a broad view of change from varied scientific perspectives,” says Greg Podgorski, Science Unwrapped chair, associate dean in the College of Science and professor in the Department of Biology. “We’re looking forward to hearing Dr. Bean’s talk about the power of data science in a changing climate.”
Established in 2009, Science Unwrapped is a public outreach program of USU’s College of Science. Science Unwrapped talks are recorded and posted online for continued viewing convenience.
