USU's 'Hot Takes' Combines Fiery Wings, Intellectual Debate to Support Graduate Students

By Selma Lekve |

LOGAN — Utah State University’s School of Graduate Studies will host "Hot Takes 2025" on Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center Ballroom.

Hot Takes combines intellectual discussions with the challenge of consuming increasingly spicy hot wings. Participants will navigate thought-provoking questions while testing their heat tolerance, aiming to earn points and secure a spot on USU Dining Services' "Wall of Flame."

The contestant with the highest score will be honored as the “Extinguisher of Flames,” receive the prestigious Dining Services GOAT Trophy, and have their name engraved on the Hot Takes Plaque displayed in The Junction.

This year's lineup features esteemed USU faculty, staff and student representatives, including:

  • Richard Cutler, Senior Vice Provost, School of Graduate Studies.
  • David Jones, Dean, College of Engineering.
  • Jamie Parry, Graduate Senator, USUSA.
  • Rebecca Walton, Executive Associate Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Macy Gustavus, Coordinator of Aquatics and Safety, Campus Recreation.
  • Matt Richey, President, USUSA.
  • Henry Silva, 2024 Mr. USU.
  • Logan Baker, USU Hurd Committee Member.

People can submit their burning questions for the contestants here.

All USU community members are invited to join. Various meal deals will be available throughout the evening, with all proceeds directly supporting the Graduate Student Emergency Hardship Fund. Offerings will include the Nugget Meal Deal, Family Meal Deal, and a "Table of Flame" package, offering unlimited wings and more. All food for Hot Takes 2025 is provided and donated by USU Dining Services.

Tickets are $5 per person or $20 for family passes, with free admission for USU students who register in advance. For tickets and additional information, visit gradschool.usu.edu/hot-takes.

Online forms are available for student registration and non-student registration.
