USU's Department of Theatre Arts Presents New, Imaginative Musical

LOGAN, Utah — The Utah State University Department of Theatre Arts presents “Between the Lines,” a modern musical based on the novel by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer.
The play follows Delilah, an outsider in a new school who seeks solace in her favorite book only to find the lines between her reality and the fantastical world within it blurring, compelling her to confront her own power to rewrite her story. The production will be at the Morgan Theatre with dates in November.
“Between the Lines” was first performed on Broadway in 2017 and concluded in 2022. The play will make its debut in Utah at Utah State University.
“Usually when a show is building up steam like that, they’re pretty restrictive on the rights, but they opened up the rights for this narrow window of time so we grabbed them when we could,” said Richie Call, producer and department head. “We like the idea of doing a show that has never been produced here.”
Beyond the novelty of this play, Call is excited to present a play with strong female representation.
“This one's based on a very popular book, written by a woman. We're seeing this story through her eyes. That's something that we're all very interested in,” Call said.
This season, the Department of Theatre Arts has focused on incorporating more modern plays to provide students with a well-rounded educational experience and prepare them for the professional world.
“We do Shakespeare to prepare students for that expectation, and then we like to do modern and classical musicals,” Call said. “We do all of it so that students can cover as much as possible during their time here.”
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 15, 16, and 19-22 with matinee showings at 1 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 23 in the Morgan Theatre. For additional details visit the online event calendar. Purchase tickets online or at the CCA Box Office located in the Chase Fine Arts building.
