USU Women's Basketball’s Schlott Nominated 2014 NCAA Women of the Year

Former Utah State [University] women’s basketball player Jennifer Schlott was one of 446 female student-athletes nominated for the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year award; it was announced Wednesday [June 18, 2014].

Schlott is one of seven student-athletes from the Mountain West to be nominated. Boise State’s Rachel Heaney, Fresno State's Meagan McKee, New Mexico’s Michaela Bezdickova, San José State Darcie Anderson, Wyoming’s Jennifer Mann and Veronica Popovici were also representatives of the MW.

Schlott is also one of three student-athletes from the Beehive State nominated for the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year along with Amber Henry-Schultz from Weber State and Mary Beth Lofgren from Utah.

The guard, who graduated in May, had a historic season, earning USU’s first-ever women’s basketball Associated Press All-America honor. She also broke both Utah State and Mountain West scoring records, en route to being named the Mountain West Player of the Year.

Schlott broke both the Mountain West and Utah State single-season record for points scored with 811. She also set the MW record for single-season scoring, averaging 26.2 points per game in overall games and 27.2 points per game in league contests. She ended her four years at USU with the career points record with 1,566.

She also finished her career breaking the Utah State record for career assists with 436, while her 192 assists during the 2013-14 season broke the USU single-season record. The guard shattered the school record for single-game scoring with 44 points against UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 19. She became the first USU player to break the 40-point mark, as the previous school record was 38 points by Pat Montgomery against Weber State in 1979. She is also the eighth Utah State men or women’s basketball player to score at least 44 points.

The Woman of the Year award honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academics, athletics, service and leadership. Of the nominees, 205 competed in Division I, 75 competed in Division II and 166 competed in Division III athletics.

Each conference then selects up to two women from the nominees to represent the conference. The Woman of the Year selection committee selects the top 30 honorees. From among those 30 candidates, the selection committee determines the top three in each division and announces the top nine finalists in September.

Utah State ended the 2013-14 season with a 15-16 record, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Tournament.
