USU Welcomes Regional Jet Flight Simulator
Utah State University Aviation program welcomed the arrival of a Commercial Regional Jet 700 Flight Training Device from Paradigm Shift Solutions in December. This device will allow USU Professional Pilot students to receive superior advanced jet training in preparation for their careers as airline- or business-jet pilots.
The new device offers a precise replica of the Bombardier CRJ 700 cockpit with full flight controls and performance capability that emulates the actual jet. The simulator will prepare USU students by offering training features including over 24,000 airport scenarios, an accurate navigation database, a fully functional flight management system integrated with autopilot and total control over simulated weather conditions.
“We are very excited about the acquisition of this flight simulator for our regional jet training program,” said Bruce Miller, department head for the School of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education. “This will give USU Professional Pilot students a head-start on their careers in the aviation industry.”
ASTE, in coordination with the College of Agriculture and the USU Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, purchased the simulator. Students within the program will fly the simulator during a three-semester-long series of regional jet courses, including ground school and simulator coursework.
Recent legislation requires the FAA to mandate higher qualifications and more advanced training for pilots starting their airline careers, said Jennifer Labs, CEO of Paradigm Shift Solutions.
“USU’s acquisition of this CRJ 700 puts them in a leadership position within the university aviation market to provide this type of advanced jet training,” she added. “We are very pleased to be associated with USU in preparing their students for professional pilot careers.”
“With the addition of this new equipment, our students will learn to fly in a FAA Level Five-capable training device allowing them to accumulate more hours toward their flight ratings and certifications, making them even more marketable after graduation,” said Sean Heiner, Chief Flight Instructor for USU Aviation.
The flight simulator will be housed at the ASTE building until May when it will be moved to the Industrial Science Building.
