USU Water Initiative Hosts CUAHSI Cyberseminar Series

USU Water Initiative hosts the first of three campus viewings of the Fall 2007 Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science Cyberseminar Series Friday, Oct. 19. The gathering is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Engineering building, room 413A.


Featured cyberseminar speaker is Robert M. Hirsch, chief hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey and co-chair of the USGS and Environmental Protection Agency’s Subcommittee on Water Availability and Quality. “Future Directions for Science and Technology in Support of Water Availability and Quality in the U.S.” is the topic for Hirsch’s talk, which is free and open to all.
 
CUASHI cyberseminars are PowerPoint presentations shown over the Web and accompanied by a presenter narration conducted through a conference call.
 
Two additional fall cyberseminars are scheduled in November. Both begin at 1 p.m. in the Engineering building, room 413A.
 
Jay Famiglietti, associate professor in the Department of Earth System Science and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine presents Friday, Nov. 2. He discusses the twin satellite GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) mission.
 
Friday, Nov. 16, Murugesu Sivapalan, professor in the Department of Geology and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is featured presenter. His topic is “Advancing Hydrologic Predictability in a Changing Environment through Interdisciplinary Synthesis.”
 
The USU Water Initiative also conducts a fall seminar series featuring guest speakers from a variety of water-related disciplines. All seminars are free and open to the public; all are held on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. in the Engineering building, room 101.
 
The next seminar is Oct. 30. Ray Huffaker, professor in Washington State University’s School of Economic Sciences presents “Existing and New Legal Paradigms for a Water-Short World.”
 
Martin Doyle, associate professor in the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Department of Geology, visits campus Nov. 13. His topic is “Aging Infrastructure, Ecosystem Restoration and the New Economy of Rivers.”
 
The USU Water Initiative is an interdisciplinary collaboration of the university’s Utah Water Research Laboratory and the colleges of Agriculture; Business; Engineering; Natural Resources; Science; and Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. Established in 2003, the initiative fosters collegial sharing of water-related research and ideas throughout campus and the community.
