USU to Host Inaugural Science Story Slam

By Preston Waddoups |

The first-ever Science Story Slam at Utah State University is set to take place from 7-8 p.m. Oct. 25 in the Big Blue Room of the Taggart Student Center on the Logan campus.

This event will feature eight speakers, including first-year undergraduates and doctoral candidates, who will share their personal experiences and stories related to science. The stories will cover a broad range of topics and emotions, all designed to prompt reflection on the profound societal impact and personal significance of science regardless of one’s background.

Temis Taylor, an authority in the field, said: “Science touches every aspect of our lives, and storytelling is ingrained in human nature. Combining these elements allows for deeper insights into the 'why,' 'how,' and 'who' of science.”

Preparation for the event included training for all eight speakers by Taylor in a science communication workshop co-sponsored by Exact Communication. The workshop aimed to equip speakers with the skills to convey their experiences effectively and stimulate audience engagement.

USU Libraries, the College of Science and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion have provided additional funding and support for the event.

Admission is open to the general public and is free of charge. Refreshments will be served, and organizers anticipate a lively and thought-provoking evening.
