USU to Celebrate Researchers Through Annual Research Week, April 10-14

By Tabitha Smiel |

Utah State University's Research Week 2023 will feature a number of recognition events, displays and research presentations next week, April 10-14, in the Merrill-Cazier Library.

Events include:

11:30 a.m. Monday, April 10 | D. Wynne Thorne Lecture | Merrill-Cazier Library New Books Lounge

The first event of Research Week 2023 celebrates the reigning recipient of the D. Wynne Thorne Career Research Award, one of the most prestigious faculty recognitions given out by USU. The lecture gives the awardee a platform to talk about their passions, their research efforts, and how their career journey made them a successful researcher.

Melanie Domenech Rodríguez, a professor in the psychology department and chair of the Institutional Review Board at USU, has had a noticeable and positive impact at Utah State over the course of two decades. She is passionate about training the next generation of psychological providers to use evidence-based techniques to work with a range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

The lecture will be held in the New Books Lounge at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, April 10, and will be followed by a reception and light refreshments. Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP.

Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12 | Student Research Symposium | Main Atrium

Utah State University's largest display of student research is the flagship event of Research Week 2023. The Student Research Symposium features hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students showcasing their research efforts to attendees. The event is in the Main Atrium of the Merrill-Cazier Library from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Students representing every college and a number of departments will present. The demonstrations include poster displays, art exhibits, performances and slide decks.

At the Student Research Symposium, students develop research communications skills and receive specific feedback from faculty evaluators to improve their presentation skills.

The top presentations, as determined by the faculty evaluators, will be recognized at the Student Research Awards Ceremony on Friday. The full symposium schedule is available on the SRS website, and presentation materials are viewable online, as well.

11:30 a.m. Friday, April 14 | Student Research Awards Ceremony | Main Atrium

The final event of Research Week 2023 is the Student Research Awards Ceremony, which recognizes the college awardees of the Peak Prize: Undergraduate Researcher of the Year, Graduate Student Researcher of the Year, and Doctoral Student Researcher of the Year, as well as the Student Research Symposium award recipients.

The ceremony will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Main Atrium of the Merrill-Cazier Library and will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.

All week | Faculty Mentor Appreciation

During Research Week, the Office of Research will be sending out notes of appreciation students have written for their mentors. Students who have not yet had the opportunity to write a note for a faculty mentor they’d like to thank are invited to stop by the Student Research Symposium on Tuesday or Wednesday to fill out a note in person.

All week | Faculty Author Exhibit

During Research Week, a display near the main doors of the Merrill-Cazier Library will recognize USU’s faculty authors. Each of the books on display were written or edited by a member of USU’s faculty and were published in the last year. The displayed works will rotate each day, and all books will be available to check-out. The full list of 2022 faculty authors is available on the Research Week website.
