USU Symposium to "Disrupt" and Advance Diversity and Inclusion
Crystal Fleming, associate professor of sociology and Africana studies at SUNY Stony Brook, will give the keynote address at the Inclusive Excellence Symposium. Fleming is the author of "How to Be Less Stupid About Race: On Racism, White Supremacy and the Racial Divide."
Utah State University President Noelle Cockett will host the third Inclusive Excellence Symposium on Wednesday, Oct. 30, to advance diversity, inclusion and respect in the university community.
This year’s theme is “Disrupt,” and organizers said they have chosen challenging topics to sow the seeds of critical thinking and spur thoughtful conversation.
“Advancing diversity, inclusion and respect is one my central priorities and also close to my heart,” said President Cockett. Last spring, she created a new Diversity and Inclusion Task Force to assess the climate for these issues at USU and create strategic objectives for the future.
The symposium will offer education, research and training for understanding the experiences of underrepresented groups in order to reduce barriers to their academic and career success.
The event will feature a keynote address by Crystal Fleming, author of How to Be Less Stupid About Race: On Racism, White Supremacy and the Racial Divide. Fleming is an associate professor of sociology and Africana studies at SUNY Stony Brook and an educator committed to empowering people with the conceptual tools needed to understand, confront and challenge white supremacy and intersectional oppression. She holds both a doctorate and master’s in sociology from Harvard University.
The symposium will also promote networking and space for university partners to collaborate and share experiences and expertise that contribute to diversity and inclusion at USU and in its community. It is free to everyone.
Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to register in advance for a full or partial day at www.thinkcareact.usu.edu/symposium. A sack lunch is included for those who register ahead of time, but space is limited.
The Inclusive Excellence Symposium is organized by Aggies Think, Care, Act, a campus-wide initiative that fosters a caring community to elevate the academic experience and prepare students to become global citizens and leaders.
