USU Studio Ensembles to Perform at Small Ensembles Concert

Utah State University’s homogeneous studio ensembles will perform at their Small Ensembles Concert 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

This culminating fall semester performance will feature flute, clarinet, horn and low brass studio ensembles.

According to Lane Weaver, USU Music (trombone) director of Athletic Bands & professional practice assistant professor, the concert will be laid-back, entertaining and easy to listen to.

There will be 10-16 USU students performing in each ensemble.

Weaver said concert attendees will have the chance to see ensembles that they’re not going to see in any other setting.

“Everybody can kind of imagine what a concert band will sound like, or a symphony orchestra or a jazz band,” Weaver said, “but these are going to be different — maybe some different sonorities or different kinds of playing, just because of the nature of the instruments being all from similar families.”

Patrons will have an opportunity to hear less-common versions of instruments within some ensembles including alto flute, bass clarinet and contrabass flute.

Weaver also said there will be a variety of genres of music performed at the concert. The pieces range from a hymn to a Disney medley to a romantic Russian overture.

Tickets for this performance are free for everyone.
