USU Student Health Services Provides Resources to Quit Smoking

Utah State University’s Student Health and Wellness Center is presenting the 35th Great American Smokeout Nov. 18 as a day to quit smoking tobacco. Booths will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center basement Nov 17 and the Merrill Cazier Library atrium Nov 18 with advice, support and information about steps to quit smoking.

“Nearly 80 percent of smokers are looking for ways to quit,” said Prevention Specialist Ryan Barfuss, “The first step is to set a date and move toward it. It’s too easy to put the date off. If you want to quit, why not now?”

The Great American Smokeout is an event established by The American Cancer Society to focus on the dangers of smoking and the challenges of quitting. It also asks people to set a date to quit smoking.

Student Health Services will provide brochures that address the difficulty of cessation and provide tips for stress and weight management. “Quit Kits” will also be available at each booth containing items to curb tobacco cravings; including gum and toothpaste. Classes both on and off campus are available for students without a fee, and online meetings can be arranged for privacy.
