USU Student Health Services Promotes Alcohol Screening Event

The Utah State University Student Health Services and Counseling Center will hold an Alcohol Screening Event April 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Taggart Student Center’s Stevenson Ballroom.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about dangerous behaviors involving alcohol through games, prizes and education. A booth will also be set up with information regarding the proper use of alcohol and how to help a friend with an addiction or other dangerous behavior. Counselors will also be available to talk and answer questions about risky behavior and how to help a friend who is participating in risky behavior.

“Students should attend the event because it is useful for everyone to know about substance abuse,” said USU Student Wellness Center intern and health education specialists Camie Hansen. “There will also be door prizes and counselors available to talk about if you, or someone you know, are in danger of developing risky behavior.”

Student Health Services began the event in 2001.

“The event is a good way for students to gain an awareness of their behaviors concerning alcohol consumption,” said Student Health Services intern Michelle Swaner. “If we can identify and help one student at risk the event was successful.”

Swaner said she knows a majority of USU students choose not to drink but said the event will still be useful for them.

“When planning this event we tried to strike common ground with all students,” Swaner said.

The event is free and open to the public.
