USU Shooting Club Pulls Their Way to Victory, Wins Team High Overall Score at Regional Qualifier

The USU Shooting Club skeet team, consisting of Haedyn Buchanan, Jayden McGeehan, Koltin Kunzler, Wade Hendrickson and Ty Rowser, won first place with a score of 438 out of 500, besting the second-place team by just one point.

LOGAN, Utah — The Utah State University Shooting Club took home several awards during the Western Region Qualifier, held Jan. 28-29, 2023 in Phoenix, Ariz. In addition to various individual awards, the team took home the Team High Overall award, scoring the most points collectively throughout the competition– 1,597 out of a possible 2,100 points.

The USU team consisted of seven competitors (Haedyn Buchanan (267), Jayden McGeehan (231), Koltin Kunzler (242), Wade Hendrickson (222), Ty Rowser (239), Ethan Edwards (201), and Tayler Lewis (195)). It was the club’s first event of the season and is the biggest event the club has ever attended.

In addition to the club scoring the highest collective score overall, the skeet team, consisting of Buchanan, McGeehan, Kunzler, Hendrickson and Rowser, won first place with a score of 438 out of 500, besting the second-place team by just one point.

For individual awards, Buchanan won first place in all three women’s events, scoring 99 out of 100 in the women’s skeet shoot, 97 out of 100 in the trap shoot and 71 out of 100 in the sporting clay course. She also was awarded the Women’s High Score award and had the highest collective score of anyone in the competition, scoring 17 points higher than the next closest finisher. She also was the highest scorer or tied for the highest score in each event.

McGeehan won first place in the men’s skeet shoot, scoring 95 out of 100 and scored 231 out of 300 overall. Rowser won first place in the men’s trap shoot, scoring 97 out of 100 and 239 out 300 overall. Kunzler had the third highest collective score of any shooter, scoring 242 overall.

The Western Region Qualifier is organized by the National Collegiate Shooting Sports Athletic Association and was hosted by the Ben Avery Clay Target Center in Phoenix. The event consisted of competitors from four universities, including USU, Wichita State, Arizona State and Nebraska Concordia. All competitors were collegiate students, from various class years.
