USU Recognizes the 2018-2019 Fulbright U.S. Scholars and Specialists

Utah State University recognizes the 2018-19 Fulbright U.S. Core Scholars and Specialists and 2019-20 U.S. Student semi-finalists. As a top-producer for 2018-19, USU continues to see growth in Fulbright applications and grants for scholars, specialists and students. Five core scholars and one specialist were awarded Fulbright grants for research and teaching programs around the world.  

USU Fulbright Core Scholars 2018-2019 Academic Year 

• Roger Coulombe – Biomedical Sciences in Finland 
• Laura Gelfand – Art History in United Kingdom
• David Hole – Agricultural and Food Products in Cambodia
• Shireen Keyl – Bi/multilingual and Multicultural Education in Jordan 
• John Rice – Geotechnical Engineering in Netherlands 

USU Fulbright Specialists 2018-2019 Academic Year 

• Melody Graulich – American Studies in Canada 

USU Fulbright U.S. Students Semi-finalists 2019-2020 Academic Year 

• Daisy Ahlstone – Anthropology open-research grant in Australia
• Zachary Brown – English teaching assistantship in Slovak Republic
• Hannah Penner – English teaching assistantship in Brazil 

Fulbright U.S. Student finalists will be announced between April and June, scheduled to leave at various times between August 2019 and June 2020. 

USU Fulbright liaisons report the university has seen an increase in awareness, support, and application submission for Fulbright grants since they started Fulbright campaigns in 2017, after being appointed official liaisons for the university. 

“The Fulbright community continues to grow and prosper at USU because of the support faculty and students receive from their departments, administration, Fulbright alumni and peer mentors,” said Shelly Ortiz, the Fulbright program advisor. 

Fulbright alumni serve as advisors and mentors to other faculty and student applicants. In February 2019, Fulbright alumni mentored applicants in breakout sessions at workshops, administrated by Fulbright liaisons from the Office of Global Engagement. The student and scholar workshops provided guidance and feedback on best practices for applications and expected timelines. Application tips and resources are also provided to applicants in monthly newsletters. Summer workshops will be available for applicants to meet with Fulbright mentors for feedback. Grants for Fulbright U.S. Core Scholars and Specialists are awarded directly to the faculty members. USU receives no formal notification for Fulbright awards, until the end of the award year. Awarded faculty members are encouraged to share the good news with the Fulbright liaisons by emailing exchangevisitors@usu.edu.
