The investiture ceremony to install Elizabeth R. Cantwell as the president of Utah State University will be held on April 12, 2024.

LOGAN, Utah — The formal investiture to install Elizabeth R. Cantwell as the president of Utah State University will be April 12 in the Daines Concert Hall. The ceremony will be from 5-6:30 p.m. President Cantwell was announced as the 17th president of USU on May 19, 2023, and assumed the role on Aug. 1, 2023.

“The investiture of a new president is one of the most significant markers that shapes the history of a university,” said Jacey Skinner, chair of the USU Board of Trustees. “We expect President Cantwell’s tenure to bring opportunity for growth, improvement and advancement for our students and the institution, and we look forward to celebrating this historic occasion with the entire university community.”

A historic tradition, an investiture is a formal academic ceremony conferring the authority and symbols of high office. With roots tracing back to the Middle Ages, the ceremony symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge and is an opportunity for universities and their communities to welcome and celebrate a new era.

Investiture ceremonies are typically conducted during or at the conclusion of a new president’s first year in office. The ceremony will include an academic procession featuring delegates from various colleges and universities alongside esteemed USU faculty. Marchers wear the colorful academic regalia of their own alma mater.

Following the ceremony, a reception will commence in the Merrill-Cazier Library, where a new Aggie Ice Cream flavor in honor of President Cantwell will be revealed.

Seating for the event will be limited. Those who would like to attend are asked to RSVP for the event by visiting the following website: www.usu.edu/investiture.

For those unable to attend the event in person, the ceremony will also be live streamed on AggieCast. Watch parties will take place at many of USU's Statewide Campuses.
