USU Polynesian Student Union Hosts Annual Luau Event

The Polynesian Student Union at Utah State University holds its annual luau Saturday, March 26.

The annual Light the Fire Within luau, hosted by the Utah State University Polynesian Student Union, is a way to sample the rich culture of Polynesia. Spectators will experience the different islands through dance performances and traditionally prepared Polynesian food.

“The luau shows our culture, the differences between the islands and the unity between us all,” said Ashley Ryan, current PSU treasurer. “Everyone is welcome into our family for this event, just as our dancers come from different cultures as both local and international students.”

The evening starts with dinner by Pauni Island Catering beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the LDS Institute building on 600 Darwin Ave. Dinner includes kalua pork, teriyaki chicken, sweet meatballs, rice, salads and guava cake.

Performances include dances representative of Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, New Zealand, Hawaii and Tahiti. The performances start at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the USU Taggart Student Center in the ballroom.

“These dances are an excellent way to showcase our club, the accomplishments of our members and provide excellent information about the islands represented,” said Darci Denney, vice president of PSU.

Tickets for the performance are $7, and $15 for dinner and the performance. Group and family rate tickets are available. Purchase tickets at the USU Access & Diversity Center in TSC 315 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, call (435) 797-1728.
