USU Outdoor Programs to Host 2023 Banff Film & Book Festival

By Marcus Jensen |

LOGAN, Utah — Utah State University Outdoor Programs will host the annual Banff Film Festival tour Feb. 3-4 at the Ellen Eccles Theatre. The festival is one of the largest and most prestigious mountain festivals in the world and celebrates the amazing achievements in worldwide outdoor storytelling and filmmaking.

The community is invited to attend the festival and discover a new wonder of the natural world. Tickets for the event are $20 for one day or $32 for the weekend. USU students can purchase tickets at a discount, $15 per day. The festival will show different films each night starting at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday. The films will take audiences on an up-close and personal journey to remote vistas, analyzing topical environmental issues and exploring the mountain world.

“Utah State University Outdoor Programs is one of the longest running hosts in the intermountain West and we are excited to see everyone again this year,” said Dan Galliher, assistant director of Adventure Programs & Marketing. We truly appreciate the partnership with the Ellen Eccles Theater. It is an amazing venue to see some awesome movies.”

All profits from the event will go to help fund the Lyon, Maas, Mueggler Outdoor Leadership Scholarship, which helps students pay for the Desert Mountain Medicine Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification course. The scholarship is named for Max Lyon, Keith Maas and Karl Mueggler, who died in an avalanche in the Bear River Range east of Logan in 1997. The three young men were exceptional athletes, noted for their climbing, kayaking and backcountry skiing abilities, among their many other outdoor talents. Although they each showcased an adventurous spirit, the trio were also noted for their voices in the community, their outdoor activism and commitment to education. This scholarship is an attempt to continue their legacy.

The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour began in 1976 in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The tour now reaches 550 locations in 40 countries throughout the world. Additional sponsors for the event include Camp Saver, The Sportsman, and Al’s Sporting Goods.

Tickets to the festival can be purchased online by visiting https://www.cachearts.org. Use the Shows & Tickets dropdown menu to select the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival tab.
