USU Office of Equity Annual Report Shows Rising Trust in Reporting and Enhanced Support Initiatives
Utah State University’s Office of Equity has published its fourth consecutive annual report, detailing efforts during the 2023-24 academic year to prevent and respond to incidents of sexual misconduct and discrimination across all USU campuses.
Between August 2023 and July 2024, the Office of Equity received 1,462 incident reports, leading to 898 unique cases, an 11% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 1,026 supportive measures were provided to assist individuals, including enhancements such as improved lactation spaces made possible through collaboration with USU Facilities and the USU Disability Resource Center.
Executive Director Matthew Pinner emphasized that the rise in reports reflects growing trust in our support systems. “Increased reporting signals growing confidence in our processes. This report underscores our commitment to respect, inclusivity, and transparency at USU as we work to create a safe, welcoming environment,” Pinner said.
The Office of Equity provides education, reporting options, and supportive measures, alongside a neutral grievance process. This year, the office hired a new senior prevention specialist, Susan Young, who has developed tailored education for various groups across campus, as well as Jes Christensen, a new traveling statewide prevention specialist, who ensures that critical resources are accessible to all USU locations.
In addition to its on-campus efforts, the Office of Equity expanded its impact across the Mountain West by leading quarterly Title IX Coordinator meetings with regional institutions, fostering a collaborative approach to sharing insights, best practices, and enhancing support networks beyond USU.
Prevention efforts remained strong, with 865 trainings impacting over 15,000 individuals through compliance, respondent education, and outreach sessions designed to foster respect and accountability.
