USU Nursing Program Ranks Well in the West

Nursing students complete training in one of the lab settings. USU's nursing program is in the top 13 percent of programs in the West.

The nursing program at Utah State University was recently ranked in the top 13 percent of western nursing programs, according to NurseJournal.org.

The rankings are based on five categories: quality (including NCLEX pass rates), affordability, convenience, satisfaction (reflected in retention rates and professor ratings) and value.

“We believe that a good nursing school provides a quality education at a reasonable cost and offers educational options that make it easier for today’s busy students to attend,” the organization said in a statement accompanying the rankings.

Dr. Sandie Nadelson, USU’s director of nursing, said the ranking reflect the strengths of USU’s program, which recently became part of the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services.

“I think one of the things we have going for us is affordability,” Nadelson said. “We really consider the cost of things like the books and course fees to make it affordable.”

Students can also apply for scholarships and financial aid.

Convenience is also a big factor.

“We have ways for students from across the state to attend the class without commuting,” Nadelson said.

Programs can be accessed in the Uintah Basin, USU Eastern and Moab via satellite broadcast.

Plans are in place to expand the program, both geographically and in terms of degrees offered. A two-year program will be offered in Tooele in the future. The college is also working to build a bachelor’s program, which will be offered on the Logan campus.
