LOGAN, Utah — The Caine College of the Arts Department of Music will host a Faculty Saxophone Recital featuring its newest saxophone and jazz professor, Andrew Stonerock. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.
The evening will consist of both classical and jazz saxophone music, promising a rich blend of musical styles, full of artistry and virtuosity.
The concert will begin with a classical section with pianist Mayumi Matzen, showcasing works by composers Paul Bonneau, Fernande Decruck and Jules Demersseman.
“The first half will be very friendly to the ear,” Stonerock said. “Saxophone Music can sometimes be a little jarring, but this is going to be a quite pleasant recital.”
The second half will transition to an exciting jazz portion, where Stonerock will be joined by Corey Christiansen (guitar), Braun Khan (bass), and Jason Nicholson (drums). The program will feature compositions by Billy Strayhorn, Kenny Garrett and The Beatles, along with original works by the ensemble.
“The recital really shows you both sides of the saxophone; both the classical side and the jazz side,” Stonerock said. “I think it also will be a good night of music that really showcases some different styles of music and what saxophone can do in the musical world.”
Before joining the faculty at Utah State University in August, Stonerock built an impressive career as a versatile musician and educator, performing with esteemed ensembles such as the Colorado Symphony and recording with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, while also leading jazz groups and directing international jazz camps. With a Doctorate in Saxophone Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado and teaching awards to his name, he brings a wealth of experience and excellence to USU.
“My colleagues are fantastic. The students are great. It's a really great place to be. Everyone's very nice, works hard, and does the right things,” Stonerock said. “I think Utah State University is a really great place to be, and I'm really happy to be here.”
The Faculty Saxophone Recital is free and open to the public with a livestream available on the Caine College of the Arts YouTube Channel. For more information, visit the online calendar.
