USU Creates Crafters License for Local Craftspersons

Utah State pillows in the making. Crafters can become licensed to create Utah State University branded items.

Aggie crafters and creators can rejoice.

Utah State University’s Trademark Licensing office has created a crafters license. The program hopes to encourage local craftspersons to create and sell their products and crafts without infringing on university guidelines.

“This is for the craftsperson,” Heidi Adams, the USU Trademark Licensing director, said. “We value and love the things they create – and they do it with the best of intentions – but often goods aren’t officially licensed. This is an accessible path for crafters to make their high-quality, locally produced goods and sell them at craft fairs and online.”

According to Adams, the program, which was started at USU in 2015, has encouraged a healthy relationship between home-grown creators and university brands across the nation.

“Counterfeit items aren’t just Gucci purses; they’re everywhere, and the problem is affecting a lot of universities,” Adams said. “This effort will help our school, help local crafters and make really cool, new products available to Aggies.”

The license can be found online. After submitting an application, the product will be reviewed. If the product is approved, applicants will receive a USU Crafters License certification and stickers to be placed on the officially licensed goods.
