USU College of Engineering Associate Dean for Research Publishes Textbook

Rose Hu, associate dean for research, recently published a textbook with colleagues on 5G networks. She also will receive funding from the National Science Foundation for continuing research in the same subject.

Rose Hu, associate dean for research in the College of Engineering at Utah State University, recently published a book on her research, titled 5G and Beyond Wireless Communication Networks,” by Wiley-IEEE.

In collaboration with Haijian Sun from University of Georgia and Yi Qian from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, the book, published in November, examines the recent progress in research and development in the area, covering topics on fundamental 5G requirements and its enabling technologies. Sun was previously Hu’s doctorate student at USU.

“Our research explores various aspects of 5G networks, such as the architecture of 5G services and the technologies that enable them,” Hu said. “This includes things like highly dense small cell, heterogenous networks and mmWave wireless communications, as well as AI and machine learning in wireless networks. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to 5G wireless networks and practical discussions on the latest developments in 5G research and technologies.”

The book contains 12 chapters categorized into three main topics: 5G new radio research, discussions on the interactions of mobile edge computing, wireless technologies and secure spectrum sharing in 5G and beyond.

In addition to publishing a textbook, Hu also recently received funding from the National Science Foundation for continuing research in 5G and Internet of Things. The research will be on privacy-preserving data sharing and processing for mobile internet measurement and traffic analytics. About $510,000 was awarded to Hu and her colleagues from The University of Wisconsin-Madison and The University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Hu will receive $170,000 for USU’s portion and is the USU principal investigator.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to continue this research with my colleagues,” Hu said. “I hope the outcome will be beneficial for the research and technology communities.”
