USU Center for Community Engagement Announces 2023 Fall Workshop Series

On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, the Utah State University Center for Community Engagement (CCE) will kick off its fall workshop series. Students from all academic disciplines will be given the opportunity to hear from community leaders about some of the most pressing challenges impacting our community. Students will also find out how to apply their education to the greater good and respond to community-identified needs in meaningful ways.

Nelda Ault-Dyslin, CCE assistant director of Community Engagement, encourages all students interested in getting involved with the community to attend. “These workshops lay the foundation for high-quality community engagement,” she says.

Tuesday, October 3 from 4-5 p.m.: Intro to Community Engagement

Taggart Student Center Aspen Room #221

This workshop will give students the opportunity to explore the Pathways of Public Service and identify ways in which they can make a unique contribution to the public good. In addition, students will learn about the Community Engagement principles of reciprocity and mutual benefit and discover how to develop partnerships that amplify community voice.

Wednesday, October 11 from 5-6 p.m.: Food Security & Sustainable Food Systems

Taggart Student Center Aspen Room #221

In this workshop, students will learn about hunger in our community and how USU food recovery and fruit tree gleaning programs are addressing food waste and food insecurity. In addition, students will learn how reducing food waste and meat consumption can help curb greenhouse gas emissions, reduce deforestation, and save money!

Wednesday, October 18 from 4-5:30 p.m.: Is there a Future for Civil Discourse in Politics?

Taggart Student Center Aspen Room #221

Engaging in conversations across political divides helps us find common ground and moves our country toward a stronger democracy. In this workshop, Utah State Representative Dan Johnson (Republican) and Patrick Belmont (2022 Democratic Candidate) will share their personal experiences engaging in respectful discussion of issues to find mutual understanding and make informed decisions for the greater good. This workshop is co-sponsored by the USU Heravi Peace Institute and the Center for Community Engagement.

The series will repeat in January with a new set of topics. Light refreshments provided.
