USU-Brigham City Awarded Certification for Sustainable Building
The recently opened building on the USU-Brigham City campus has earned a LEED® Gold certification.
Utah State University’s recently opened Brigham City academic building joins nine other USU buildings in attaining LEED® Gold certification.
The 50,000 square-foot building achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. It is one of 10 LEED® buildings in the USU system and one of 3,490 certified higher education projects across the country.
“USU-Brigham City’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and USU-Brigham City serves as a prime example of just how much we can accomplish.”
USU supports certification efforts.

Considering the impact of our buildings on the environment and community health is one way the university ensures current and future Aggies enjoy the beauty of Utah.”
Notable sustainability aspects of the building include local materials, energy efficiency and water efficiency measures:
- Approximately 44 percent of the building’s materials were extracted, harvested or manufactured within 500 miles, supporting the local economy and reducing transportation costs and impacts.
- The building’s fixtures use approximately 46 percent less water than traditional fixtures.
- The building is estimated to save approximately 46 percent on energy costs.
“This new USU building in Brigham City is not only beautiful, it is also very functional and usable,” said USU-Brigham City Dean Tom Lee. “It is exciting that the building is also so efficient in energy and water use. In the first six months of use, it has elevated the educational experience for our students, faculty and staff.”
Jacoby Architects took the lead on the architectural and engineering team for the Brigham City building.
The LEED rating system, developed by the USGBC, is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.
