USU ASME Wins National Achievement and Engagement Awards

By Sydney Dahle |

The Pumpkin Toss is an annual event hosted by ASME. In 2022 they had a turnout of over 1,700 people.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers section at Utah State University received two awards from the national leadership team for the 2022-2023 school year: the Section Achievement Award and the Outstanding Community Engagement/Project Award.

The leadership team of the ASME Utah State University Student Section made efforts to follow procedures, stay in contact with ASME staff, and provide programs and activities helping students on campus. The national leadership team of ASME selects student chapters each year that display the previous qualities.

“The section did an outstanding job planning events to engage the community in STEM activities,” said Zac Humes, faculty adviser for ASME. “I’m always impressed by the section’s commitment, new ideas and collaboration with other student leaders.”

During the 2022-2023 school year, USU ASME hosted a number of events to engage with students and the community, including a resume night, the annual pumpkin toss, soapbox derby and pinewood derby, tours, demos and more. The pumpkin toss alone had a turnout of over 1,700 people.

The organization’s goals for the upcoming school year include increasing leadership participation, improving communication of events and organization of club structure, bringing awareness to USU and the College of Engineering and inspiring support between students.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming school year and all our upcoming activities,” said Karmen Teucsher, president of USU ASME. “I am excited to see the turnout of both fellow students and the community.”
