Tracy Aviary Highlights Caine College Student Design Work

Under the guidance of Professor Darrin Brooks, first- and second-year students in Interior Design and Architecture courses designed pieces for exhibit at the Tracy Aviary.

Students were given admission to the aviary to observe and research the birds and their habitats.

Drawing inspiration from what they saw and modern architecture, they created sculptural birds and habitats that are on exhibit at the aviary.

“There is a strong connection to nature in the design process. Students learned about birds at the Aviary and conditions that threaten them, like global warming,” Brooks said. “Students also studied the birds, completed a color analysis, and applied the colors to specific parts of their project.”

More than 150 student projects will be displayed in Tracy Aviary, the nation’s oldest aviary. The collaboration highlights the talents of students in Utah State’s Interior Architecture and Design Program, ranked 8th in the nation, and helps the community connect with the students and the program.

It also gives students client experience early in their education.

“Our partnership with the Educational Outreach Program at the Aviary provided Interior Architecture and Design students with a client,” Brooks said. “It is essential to prepare students for practical experience outside the classroom. Students learn creative problem-solving skills and engage with a community partner.”

The exhibition will run from Feb. 8-29. The Aviary is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last admission available at 4 p.m.
