Top Programs In The Nation

USU’s top-20 education programs, internationally recognized music faculty and accounting students who consistently rank in the top 10 for passing the CPA exam on their first try are just a few of the reasons USU’s academics and creative arts are among the best.

SPECIAL EDUCATION & Rehabilitation

Both programs in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation again ranked in the top 20 in the U.S. News & World Report Annual Survey of Graduate Programs in the United States.

The department produces more special education licenses than any program in the state, and Master of Rehabilitation Counseling graduates have a 94% first-time pass rate on the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor exam (almost 20% higher than the national average).

In addition, the ASSERT autism training and research program has become a model in school districts throughout the state and on campus where it is at the forefront of training the next generation of researchers in the area of autism.

MUSIC

Since he was named head of USU’s Music Department, Craig Jessop has been a guest conductor on multiple occasions, including an appearance with the Boston University Symphony Orchestra. He’s taken programs to Washington, D.C., and he directs the community-based American Festival Chorus.

In 2009, the choir performed with distinguished guests, from Utah Sen. Robert F. Bennett in A Lincoln Portrait to an immensely successful fundraising concert with Donny Osmond in May and a summer tour with Maureen McGovern. The chorus performed when Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert was sworn in as Utah’s governor.

The Fry Street Quartet, USU’s professional string quartet in residence, received a Best of State medal in the Arts and Entertainment category and was named the state’s “Best Instrumental Group.”

Accounting

When it comes to accounting, graduate students have earned USU a national top-ten ranking. USU ranked eighth in the nation for students who pass the CPA exam on their first try, according to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.

“Only three schools have ever been in the top ten for two consecutive years,” said Department Head Larry Walther. “In 2008, USU ranked fifth in the country, with 80 percent of students passing.”
Additionally, a student accounting organization called Alpha Beta Psi has won the Superior Chapter Award for 32 consecutive years — the longest streak in the nation.
