Tips to Keep Yourself and Others Safe on USU Campuses

Campus safety is a collaborative effort that involves everyone, including students, faculty, staff and visitors. The actions of all members of the community make a difference in making Utah State University campuses safer.

“Over the last 19 months, most of us have focused on safety in terms of the pandemic, but with everyone back on campus, we need to adjust our thinking to account for criminal threats as well,” said Chief Earl Morris of Utah State University Police.

Though it is never possible to eliminate your risk of becoming the target of a crime, the following actions can reduce the risk to yourself and improve safety in USU campus communities:

• Keep your belongings secured and doors locked, including your devices, bike, vehicle and home.
• Be aware of your surroundings. If you wear earbuds or headphones, keep the sound low enough to hear other noises or use an earbud in only one ear.
• Report suspicious behavior. If someone is behaving in an aggressive or suspicious way towards you or another, report it to Public Safety, either through the online reporting form or through chat in the Utah State Safe app.
• Trust your instincts and call the police if you are concerned about your safety. If you are nervous about crossing campus or parking lots alone or after dark, use the Utah State Safe app to ask Public Safety to track your walk. The Utah State Safe app works on all USU campuses throughout the state.
• Make sure you understand and have consent before engaging in sexual activity. Learn about how to report sexual assault, stalking or relationship violence that occurred on the Logan campus to USU Police. USU Police includes a specialized unit with a confidential advocate and a dedicated law enforcement detective.
