The Ocotillo Winds Performs on Campus

A visiting trio from Arizona State University, the Ocotillo Winds, performs Monday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall on the Utah State University campus.

Tickets for the Ocotillo Winds are $5 for general admission; USU students and Cache Valley school students are admitted without charge.

The Ocotillo Winds are a refreshingly entertaining breeze from the desert southwest, said USU music department professor Nicholas Morrison. The trio’s programs are fast paced and packed with the dynamic energy of its three virtuosos — oboist Martin Schuring, clarinetist Robert Spring and bassoonist Albie Micklich.

With repertoire from the French countryside, the Brazilian rainforest and downtown Phoenix, the trio’s concerts are anything but dry, Morrison said. Monday’s concert includes works by Alexandre Tansman, Ervin Schulhoff and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

“We’re pleased to offer this trio to Cache Valley,” said Morrison. “They are three of today’s finest teachers and performers on their instruments from one of the country’s major music schools.”
