Text Club Creates Campus-Wide Communication Tool

The Jon M. Huntsman School of Business is offering free Aggie ice cream for the school year and a $500 gift card to the University Bookstore as inducements to students to join its new texting club. The club sends out news and event updates via text messaging during the school year to all students who opt-in to the program.

"Text messaging is the preferred communication tool of students,” said Eric Schulz, co-director of strategic brand management for the Huntsman School of Business. “Some 98 percent of students regularly use text messaging, as it’s the most efficient and effective way to quickly communicate.”

Students who enter to win either the year supply of Aggie Ice Cream (text AGGIE to 88222) or the $500 University Bookstore Gift Card (text BOOKSTORE to 88222) are automatically signed up for the club and will receive access to participating in fun games, flash mobs and other activities during the school year, in addition to information related to campus and business school events.

“We will use the texts judiciously and make sure it’s a good mix of fun and information,” said Schulz. "For example, if Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg were coming on campus to speak, we'll announce via the Aggie Text Club where and when that is happening, so students could attend. If there is an event wrapped around an athletic event, like a viewing party at Romney Stadium to watch the BYU-USU football game on the Jumbo Tron, we'll text that. But we won't be sending out messages for Glee Club meetings.”

He hopes that more than 15,000 students will opt into the program. The ice cream and gift card contests run through Sept. 16, with winners announced via text message the following week.
