Sen. Orrin Hatch to speak at USU Renewable Energy Seminar

Sen. Orrin Hatch will speak at Utah State University April 8 as part of the first-ever Partners In Business seminar on renewable energy, clean technology and sustainability.

 

The Renewable Energy, Cleantech and Sustainable Business Seminar is hosted by the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business’s student-led Partners In Business program. The event is open to the public and will be held at the Eccles Conference Center on the USU campus. The cost to attend the seminar is $185.

 

As a strong proponent of renewable energies and energy efficiency, Hatch has helped with the development of initiatives including Raser Technologies’ Orrin Hatch Geothermal Power Plant near Beaver, Utah, said Stephen Allred, seminar coordinator. He has also been recognized for his position on using natural gas resources available in the United States that have yet to be utilized for automobiles, Allred said.

 

The Renewable Energy Seminar will also feature the Utah premier of Wind Uprising, an award-winning documentary written and produced by USU marketing professors Cathy L. Hartman and Edwin Stafford, with the help of Michelle Nunez of GreenTech Films. Narrated by former senator Jake Garn, the film documents the process involved in developing the wind project in Spanish Fork, Utah. Wind Uprising was a Seven Summits Award winner in the Mountain Film Festival in Mammoth, Calif., this year.

 

Following the film, Hartman and Stafford will join Tracy Livingston, director and CEO of Wasatch Wind, and Christine Mikell, senior project development manager for Wasatch Wind, in a panel discussion. Former mayor of Spanish Fork Joe Thomas, who was instrumental in procuring the wind farm for his community, is also on the panel.

 

Other leading industry researchers, experts and consultants will provide practical knowledge to help businesses, renewable energy entrepreneurs and policymakers capitalize on emerging technologies to move toward a cleaner, more sustainable future, said Allred.

 

Continuing professional education (CPE) credits are available for all of the Partners In Business seminars. The events offer participants the opportunity to network with industry leaders, faculty and students.

 

The seminar is affiliated with the Center for the Market Diffusion of Renewable Energy and Clean Technology.
