RadioACTIVE: USU College of Science Hosts 'Science Week' Oct. 30-Nov. 3

Student-led Science Council plans celebration week of networking and activities for all Aggies

The Utah State University community is invited to enjoy brain-energizing fun as USU’s College of Science student council hosts Science Week, Oct. 30 through Nov. 3. The theme for the celebration week is “radioactivity.”

“We have an energetic week planned for Aggies,” says Jaxton Winder, USUSA College of Science senator. “We’ll start off with some Halloween fun, culminating with Science Unwrapped’s ‘Radioactivity’ gathering, and a lot of great opportunities for networking, creative de-stressing activities, games, student presentations and stargazing in between.”

All are invited to Science Week activities on USU’s Logan campus, which include:

Monday, Oct. 30

Ghoulish Game-Night will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center International Lounge. Join in Halloween-themed games, including board games, card games and video games, and enjoy free snacks provided by the Science Council.

Tuesday, Oct. 31

From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., all Aggies are invited to Paranormal Paints in the TSC International Lounge. Get your creative juices flowing with various art activities hosted by College of Science departments and student organizations. Activities include spooky watercolors, thrifted ghost paintings, digital glitch art and more.

Wednesday, Nov. 1

Drop by the Taggart Student Center International Lounge from 11:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. for Dogs, Donuts & Don’t Stress. Relax with therapy animals, while enjoying donuts, hot chocolate and coffee. Join in a soul-renewing yoga session (no experience necessary), and visit booths with information about campus and community resources, opportunities and activities highlighting health, wellness and student advocacy. You matter.

Thursday, Nov. 2

Rapid Fire Research, the College of Science’s signature student research presentation event, is BACK Thursday, Nov. 2, from 5:30-8 p.m. in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center. Participants have four minutes and four slides to present their BIG IDEA. USU undergraduates and graduate students of all majors are invited to participate in this fun, fast-paced activity before an enthusiastic, supportive audience. Prizes will be awarded to the top three participants, judged by on-campus professors. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.USU students can apply online to present at Rapid Fire Research through Friday, Oct. 27.

Friday, Nov. 3

Aggie students are invited to Pizza with Professors from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Cockett Life Sciences Building, Room LSB 131. Hear from a panel of faculty members from each of the college’s six academic departments about their unique research efforts, and how students can get involved in the research. Afterwards, enjoy free pizza and opportunities to mingle with professors and student researchers.

On Nov. 3, Aggies and the local community are invited to Science Unwrapped at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130). Featured speaker is USU chemist Scott Ensign, who presents “Radioactivity.” Refreshments and hands-on learning activities, conducted by USU student groups and community organizations, follow the talk.

Also on Nov. 3, all are invited to Public Viewing Night at the USU Observatory on the roof of the Science Engineering Research (SER) building from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Important note: Please visit observatory.usu.edu prior to arrival on public night, as the gathering will be cancelled in the event of cloudy or inclement weather.
