President Cantwell Sends Message to Students Regarding Residence Life Program

Editor’s Note: President Cantwell and Interim VP Deschamps sent this email to all students living in on-campus housing on the Logan campus on Jan. 10, 2025. USU has been in contact with state leaders regarding this issue and is happy to continue working with them as the university evaluates its policies and practices to ensure USU is, first and foremost, meeting the needs of the residents in student housing while also complying with relevant law.

Dear Students,

We’re happy to see all of you on campus again!

As many of you know, the Residence Life program at Utah State University has come under scrutiny on social media and in the general media. We want to reach out to you to let you know we value the voices of all of our students.

We are writing to share a few things we would like you to know.

  • You are able to share your comments, feedback, concerns, and suggestions directly with the university, either anonymously or with your name. USU Residence Life provides a reporting form for this purpose. These reports go to the Interim Vice President of Student Affairs. We want to hear not only your concerns, but your ideas for how to improve Residence Life. As a reminder, this form allows students who live in on-campus housing to share information anonymously. Know that we can take more action in some situations if you share your contact information.

This reporting form is available on the housing website by logging into the resident portal. You can also access it via the Housing “Contact Us” webpage (click on “report a concern”) or on your myUSU dashboard under “Campus Safety” and “Pages--On-Campus Housing.”

  • In the coming weeks, USU will begin an external review of the Housing and Residence Life program and organization—including our policies, procedures and practices—to see what improvements we can make to better serve our students who live on campus.

USU strives to provide resources and support for Aggies living on campus, so that you have what you need to be successful students and citizens. We are glad you chose to be a part of our on-campus community, and we seek to support your growth and academic achievements.

Best regards for a great semester,

Elizabeth R. Cantwell
