New Admissions Pathway Ensures Student Success

Utah State University has unveiled a streamlined admissions process to ensure student success for those who don’t meet the minimum GPA requirements when they apply. Previously, there were two paths for students who did not qualify for automatic admission. The new Earned Admission pathway combines and simplifies the process.

In addition to gaining new study skills, those wishing to attend USU can pass a student success course and earn college credit before they’re admitted, said Katie Jo North, the executive director of new student enrollment.

“Utah State’s land-grant mission is to make a great education accessible throughout the state, and this program helps us reach that goal,” North said. “You don’t have to be a perfect student to find your perfect fit at USU.”

North said there are optional courses in English and math for students who’d like a little extra help before they’re admitted, though only the student success course is required.

“This lets students get a head-start on their education while also ensuring they have the skills in their toolset necessary for college-level coursework,” she said, “plus they save money in the process.”

Once a student applies to USU, the Office of Admissions can offer this pathway. If a student accepts, they can immediately apply for FAFSA, on-campus housing, begin orientation and even register for classes.

“As long as they complete the student success course, they’ll be able to start their first semester on-time with their peers,” North said. “This path lets future Aggies get academic help before school starts without putting a hold on experiencing our fantastic student life for themselves.”

While students can start the self-paced student success course at any time, it must be completed by August 1 in order to enroll in classes for fall 2022.
