"Natural Capitalist" to Speak at Utah State Bioneers Conference

“I grew up being taught to leave my campsite cleaner than I found it,” environmental sustainability strategist L. Hunter Lovins told Grist magazine in a recent interview. “(I was taught) that I could make a difference and that I had a responsibility to do so.”

Lovins is keynote speaker for the regional Bioneers Conference at Utah State University Oct. 15-17.

“Bioneers in Utah: Healthy Families, Healthy Communities, Healthy Environments” is the theme for the gathering, which features national conference sessions broadcast via satellite, along with hands-on workshops and exhibits presented by local scientists and vendors. One of 15 satellite conference sites in North America, this is Utah State’s first year to host a regional gathering of the 15th annual California-based meeting.

A founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute, Lovins co-authored “Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution” with Paul Hawken and Amory Lovins. She will speak at the Eccles Conference Center auditorium Saturday, Oct. 16, at 8:45 a.m. Lovins’ book, published in 2000, describes natural capitalism as a new business model that promotes environmentally friendly practices.

Lovins was named “Hero of the Planet” by Time magazine in 2000 and was one of four North Americans selected to serve as a delegate to the 2001 United Nations Prep Conference for Europe and North America for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

The cost to attend the three-day conference is $75 without meals or $100 with meals. Discount tickets, without meals, are available for $15 for students with a valid ID. Conference tickets are currently on sale in the Eccles Conference Center. Registration and conference information are also available at an Extension Web site or by calling 435-797-0423. Information about the national conference is posted at the Bioneers Web site

The Bioneers Conference is among an array of efforts Utah State University supports to foster discussion among local scholars and members of the community about issues involving local air, water, land and economic resources. In partnership with the Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce, the university hosts the first Utah State University Cache Valley Community Benchmark Summit Oct. 29. The public is invited to the day-long event, to be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Innovation Campus. Further information is posted at the Benchmark Summit Web site.
