Museum Opens May Swenson Exhibit

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University has opened “May Swenson’s Muse: Art and the West.” An opening reception is Thursday, April 12, at 5:30 p.m. in the museum lobby. The event is free and all are invited.

Brief presentations will be given by Paul Crumbley, Patricia Gantt, Megan Farnsworth and Victoria Rowe — all contributors to the project. During the opening reception, Crumbley and Gantt will sign copies of their new book “Body My House,” a collection of essays about the poet May Swenson recently released by USU Press.

May Swenson’s Muse: Art and the West is comprised of vignettes featuring new acquisitions from the permanent collection, audio recordings, paintings, sculpture and photographs that are combined with language from Swenson’s poems. Each vignette explores how visual objects inspired Swenson’s writing and her relationship to the region.

The displays pair Swenson’s poetry with works by artists, including Ansel Adams, Paul Harris and Judy Chicago. Paintings by Birger Sandzen and H.R. Reynolds portray local sites such as Bear Lake and Cache Valley. Swenson’s desk, chair and personal copy of “The Pearl of Great Price” are also on view.
