Museum + Music Returns to NEHMA Featuring an Mix of Music from John Cage to Taylor Swift

After a pandemic hiatus, the Museum + Music concert series returns to the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) with “The Post-Modern Impulse,” a concert of post-modern music devised and performed by students from the Utah State University Music Department and paired with the art exhibition Your Place in the Multiverse: Jean Lowe.

The concert will be held at NEHMA on Dec. 12, from 3-4:30 p.m. and is free and open to all. Museum + Music is a free concert series held directly in the Museum galleries. Each concert is unique and makes connections between the visual art on view and the music. Past concerts have featured jazz, hip hop, classical, traditional, Indian and other genres.

This month’s program will present a fun and eclectic range of music by John Cage, Lorde, György Ligeti, Taylor Swift, The Caretaker and others, all in conversation with Jean Lowe’s fantastic works on view.

Lowe is an American pop/conceptual multimedia artist who carefully and humorously unpacks the ironies and challenges of our 21st-century culture. Her work revolves around the intersection of popular culture, environmentalism, commerce, politics and art history, making it a fascinating juxtaposition to the musical selections, which also span conceptual and pop genres.

“This promises to be both an entertaining and intellectually provocative performance,” said Christopher Scheer, associate professor of Musicology and curator of the Museum + Music concert series. “Surrounded by (and surrounding) Jean Lowe’s dazzling art, the audience is invited to explore not only the concept of postmodernism, but also its aesthetic power to disrupt musical and visual hierarchies, systems and values.”

Visiting NEHMA

Visiting the Museum is free of charge. Doors are open Tuesday through Thursday, 10am to 5pm; Friday from 10am to 7pm; and Saturday 10am to 3pm.

NEHMA offers free visitor parking in the lot behind the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall. For public transportation, ride the Cache Valley Transit routes 1, 4, or the green or blue Loop and get off at the Fine Arts stop.
